LOL, why am I not surprised? Rand Miller shows up, and the first thing that happens is that vid starts harping on about the name "Bevin" again. Out of curiosity, when he says it's important to "a lot of us", how many does that actually mean? As far as I can tell, the whole "You're using the word 'Bevin' wrong and it needs to stop immediately!" movement seems to be a (extremely vocal) minority. I always got the impression it was one or two people making a big stink and no one else caring--although I could be wrong. Personally I think there've been so many changes and retcons in the canon that it seems odd anyone would latch onto this one thing. Maybe next time Rand is on I should pester him about making Prison Books canon again :P

Awesome that Rand made an appearance. Hopefully we'll see a few of the official characters popping in and out now and then, as well. That would be cool.

I've just been thinking each hood is an instance of the original Bevin in the original D'ni. That would fit with each hood having its own Ae'gura and the same GZ coordinates. So you have UruObsession's Bevin like you have UruObsession's Ae'gura (or GZ or Uran or K'veer etc). Easiest way to solve the problem.

Unless the word "bevin" in D'ni means a certain type of neighbourhood. "kirel" being an oppositely oriented one and other types of hoods all being called something else. Jeez its not that hard, or that important.

This makes sense. It also clears up why the stone to the hood Ae'gura has to be a stone: only stones can Link inside an Age.

I like this! :D

 Lighten up Palmner. We remember a lot of your strange polls.

vid is an important figure in the cavern and the UO "hood". He has known Rand personally for many years.

This reminds me of a time when many Jeep-like utility vehicles were referred to as jeeps, prompting Crysler to run commercials stating that "There's only one Jeep."

Just an observation.

K, this will be kind of hard to respond to since I'm kind of confused about how my polls, vid's importance and/or relationship with Rand connects with what I said, so I apologize if I'm making any incorrect assumptions here. But just to be certain this is clear: I wasn't making a personal attack on vid's character here. Vid is a friend and I was poking fun at him, that's all--just having a laugh about an issue I perceive as being a little over-vocalized, nothing more. Hope that clears up any possible misconceptions, if there were any.

They aren't still referred to as such? :blankstare:

That's it...I resolve at the ripe old age of 22 to never change my slang again. I don't care if I sound out of style. You young whippersnappers change too quickly, with your empty threes and your intern nets.

On the subject...I just say hood. If people say Bevin, I understand what they intend to convey, so... I mean, around here if someone says, "I want a coke," we say, "What kind?" A legitimate response can be anything from Dr Pepper to Pepsi to Mountain Dew or any other carbonated soft drink, not just some variation upon Coca-Cola. In the same way, people now say, "I'm going to the bevin," and people can legitimately respond with, "Which one?" It's a generalization of the specific, like with Jabba's example of Jeeps.

One thing to note, the use of 'coke' as a synonym for 'pop' or 'soda' or whatever to mean "carbonated beverage" is a regional thing over certain areas. People here for instance would give you a coca-cola if you asked for a coke (except in the really scummy areas asking the sort of people who deal in the other meaning of coke if you know what I mean :blankstare: )

On the other hand, something like 'jeep' or 'xerox' or 'kleenex' or even 'band-aid' seems to be more widespread, at least from what I've seen. There's a term for that sort of debranding generalizing. Corporations hate it with a passion, at least the ones who trademarked the name, because it means their brandname is associated with products not sold by them but similar. Not much they can do about it however, regardless of ad campaigns and lawsuits to the contrary.

Where am I going with this? While bevin may not be d'ni for "neighborhood" the fact that every hood we are in is a "bevin-style" at the least if not instanced may mean the D'ni themselves DID call them "bevins" because they all looked like that one single gated meeting place. That leads to a funny mental image of some D'ni by the name of v'hid protesting "They're not called bevin! Bevin is this one location in the cavern HERE, these places are not! Stop calling them bevin!" and everyone else ignoring that and still calling them such :P

(Speaking of which, I suggest no it's not a living area, it's actually an upper-class meeting area for a wealthy d'ni family to own, in the cavern and not an age to show they had money and prestige.. and gated via the nexus so the riff-raff couldn't ever get in (and nor could the less prestigous upper class who weren't important enough to have this new novelty maintainer's tool)

But wasn't Seret the same style as Bevin? I don't know if people even made it to Seret but if the only thing that's different is a few lights or such half of our hoods might be Serets and not Bevins. :o

I also want to say that I'm so happy we finally have lanterns in the UO hood! I love them and if there's a vault wipe whoever makes a new hood will have to remake it until the lanterns appear again because I've grown accustomed to them now. ^_^

I have never even heard of or seen anything of a "seret" at any point but as I said, they could well be various types of hoods. Seret may be an upper class version of the Bevin configuration or made of a different structural stone, or be on a different facet of the western wall.

Bevin - Single hood, first one opened by the DRC, not instanced.

Seret - Hood the Choru testers had access to, the style of Seret can be found in other hoods.

Kirel - enough said.

DRC documents and archives from their site indicate that the hoods are not instanced, the reason they have KI-coord issues was because they weren't properly implemented (there we also supposed to be coords in the Ages too which never happened).

There are a fair few of us who keep track of the history of D'ni and the restoration history, there are a few of us who spot the issues and report them. There are a fair few of us who see what happened to the canon during MOUL and curl up and cry in the corner.

vid, like myself would like to see these things corrects and steered back on course, so we will mention it to Cyan folk when we run into them. Oddly in the time since MOULA we've made more progress getting this resolved than we have in the several years since MOUL started.

Some people play for Ages, some for Puzzles, we like the story, the history and care when it gets trodden on.

So, what's how can I tell if my Bevin is built with a Seret Configuration?

Seret and Bevin were pretty much the same looking areas, Seret had the moth lamp design, where as Bevin used the hand design.

So do you guys think we'll get any visits from any official characters anytime soon? It would be cool to see Sharper, Nick, or Watson again--even if there's no real story progression (which there wouldn't be), just a conversation with official characters. A few more Bahro sitings would be really awesome, too--I know there was one at the very beginning of MOUL-a but it would be cool to have more.

A bunch of people were claiming they'd seen a Bahro in the Public Ae'gura last night around 9 or 10. I usually ignore past-tense sightings though. If I missed it I missed it. Oh well. But if no one else has posted about it, I guess I'll make a note of it here.

From what I understood (I was in Ae'gura trying to round up people for a Tsogal/Delin run), a Bahro had appeared near the Library before running around behind it and disappearing. Or something to that effect. I'm probably missing dozens of details here, as it's all second hand, but that's what I inferred. Group of about five people talking about it in the Kahlo Pub. All of them were talking at once, which made it hard to decipher their fragmented KI Texts.

Are you sure it wasn't just people talking about the sighting on the first day of MOUL-A? I know a couple people saw one back then.
